Do This When You Feel Overwhelmed

Part of being a Mom is feeling overwhelmed--overwhelmed by noise, smells, proximity of other humans, clutter, time management, the realization of everything you're responsible for, and the fact that you can't just throw in the towel and quit!

Not that you'd really want to; you actually love being a mom! You love those kids, and honestly, you wouldn't trade this life for anything! But there

are moments when you don't think you can handle one more thing--you're physically, mentally, and emotionally right on the edge.

When this happens, you need to regain some sanity, stat. Here's what I recommend--this works no matter where you are:

  1. If you're in the middle of something you really have to finish, do that. If what you're doing can be temporarily put on hold, do that. Then,

  2. Go to the bathroom and lock the door--really. You're only going to be in there for a couple of minutes; take a few deep breaths.

  3. Say a quick prayer, something along the lines of "Help me, Jesus!" or "I need you!!"

  4. Quickly think through what's on for today and eliminate one thing from the schedule; for example, decide to skip the errands you had planned; decide to order pizza for dinner; skip the dance class/music lesson/sports practice just this once. Even if you get charged for late cancellation, have no milk for a day or two, or whatever, it's worth it.

  5. Splash water on your face. Remind yourself that this moment, this day, this season, will not last forever. Tomorrow you get to re-set and start over!

Once you've decided what to eliminate, move forward without agonizing over whether or not you made the "right" decision--the number one priority right now is for you to be able to get to the end of the day without crashing, not to complete your to-do list or prove you can do it all.
